Invisible Disabilities
We’ve just come out of Invisible Disabilities Week, intended to bring awareness to the fact that many disabilities are not something that are visible to others.
Many folks out there struggle with mental health or cognitive disabilities, impacting approximately 23% of US adults each year.
Many folks struggle with physical disabilities that others can’t see – such as pain conditions which affect around 20-24% of adults in the US.
In addition, it’s important to remember that some disabilities have a range of how they impact a person’s functioning. This means a person might need to use a wheelchair some days, a cane other days and neither on yet other days. This in no way invalidates their disability or their needs for their mobility aids.
Remember that each person is fighting battles you know nothing about, let’s try a bit more compassion and curiosity rather than judgment and assumptions.
