In honor of LGBTQIA+ history month, here is a quote from James Baldwin was a gay, Black American writer and civil rights activist:

“I imagine one of the reasons people cling to their hate so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.”

Hate and participating in systems that oppress and cause harm to others creates harm to even those in power because it requires them to kill off pieces of themselves – the pieces that empathize with others, that see our common humanity, and the parts of themselves that balk at causing harm to others.
