Lack of Provider Knowledge
As EMDR therapists we are significantly more likely to cause harm when we don’t know if a client has a DID/OSDD
Without the proper precautions, use of BLS/DAS can result in:
- Breaking through dissociative barriers
- Loss of dual awareness and flooding
- Regression, decompensation, self/other harm
The impact of lack of provider training in identifying and working with DID is enormous.
It takes clients 5 – 12.5 years of treatment before receiving an accurate diagnosis of DID.
Many of the anecdotes of EMDR therapy causing harm or going awry are because the therapist did not screen for dissociation.
Without proper education and training, clinicians and clients tend to be negatively influenced by media portrayals and common myths that those with DID are crazy, dangerous or making it up.
Without proper education and training clinicians may think DID should be obvious and may therefore misdiagnose and mistreat.
If you are an EMDR therapist and are unsure how to identify or work with Dissociative Identity Disorder, I’ve created a course that gives you a foundation to start this very important work. Link HERE.
