2/16 pic Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.

As James Baldwin said, “Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.”

This is why the impact of growing up with dysfunctional, toxic or abusive caregivers is so pervasive. Children frequently learn patterns of behaviors or responding in those environments that are not healthy.

This happens even when kids can see how dysfunctional their caregivers are. And it is not their fault for having learned this ways of behaving or seeing the world.

Once you realize these patterns or ways of being are unhealthy or harmful, then it is your responsibility to work towards change. This can be hard.

Sometimes this is learned when we get together with a healthier partner.

Sometimes this is learned when we start a family and you start seeing your patterns in a different light.

Sometimes this is not learned until you get into therapy.

Find the supports you need to start changing for the better.

Your journey to heal your childhood wounds is part of a larger movement towards healing the world.
