  • Robin Williams Quote

Robin Williams said, “I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It’s not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone.”

This is how so many people who grow up in toxic homes feel, that they grew up around people who made them feel alone. This can also be how trans and non-binary people feel when raised in a non-accepting family.

This is because they are not seen, praised or validated for who they are.

All families may go through an adjustment period when their loved one comes out.

But chronic questioning of someone’s gender, worry about how others will judge the family, refusal to use the appropriate name/pronouns, and focus on how they feel about the situation (not the person who came out) will make the trans person feel alone in their own family.

For loved ones of trans and non-binary people, please do the work on your own time, with your support system, in therapy, in support groups, etc.

DO NOT force your loved one to do all the heavy lifting, or help you manage your emotions and reactions. They have their own.

Center their feelings, experiences and reactions. Don’t make them feel alone in their own family.
