  • Transphobia at the 2024 Olympics

Amidst on-going misogyny and transphobia continue on the world stage, they have shown up in the Paris Olympics as well.

A couple of cisgender female athletes have been targeted for harassment and vitriol, from online trolls to celebrities calling into question her sex and gender identity.

This is just one way in which transphobia hurts not just transgender and non-binary women, but everyone who is not a cisgender man, calling into question one’s credentials as a “real woman.”

It is a tool to discredit women who do not behave as society believes women should behave, or how women should look.

It is a tool to discredit their accomplishments and to make queer and non-conforming people of all identities make themselves smaller.

Make no mistake, transphobia hurts everyone and reduces the sexes to two small boxes that do not actually represent the full range of human experience.

And it reinforces this idea that anything associated with ‘maleness’ is somehow superior and better.

Transphobia does not protect women; it hurts us all. Transgender people deserve to participate in sports, and to be protected in sports and in life.

Support trans and non-binary people wherever you can. Call out transphobia in the spaces you occupy, combat the spread of misinformation and fight transphobic legislation in your state and on the national stage.
