Trauma recovery is not always about getting back to who you were before trauma. For some folks there was no before to get back to.

There is much truth to the idea that healing in trauma is getting back to who you were before, unlearning all the toxic and maladaptive things the trauma taught you to believe.

It is equally true that there are many out there who do not have a pre-trauma self to get back to because the trauma and neglect goes back to birth and sometime before that.

That doesn’t mean these folks can’t heal, but it’s different. It is a process of unlearning all the toxic and maladaptive things the your up-bringing taught you, AND discovering who you are and who you want to be as a healing person.
