I think our culture does a disservice to people and gives the message that we should never experience discomfort. But discomfort and pain are part of everyone’s lives to some extent and having the expectation otherwise leads to further suffering and it leads us to not learn how to cope with and tolerate discomfort when it does happen.

If you don’t learn these skills you are more vulnerable to addiction as a means of escape. Once we learn to be able to sit with that discomfort we learn that we can actually survive it and it does in fact end. When you’re experience is more than day to day discomfort, but a chronic distress, unhappiness and chaos, then you might need to learn more skills and have some professional help in this process.
