BIPOC

So there seems to be some confusion out there regarding what is meant by BIPOC so I have spelled it out here.

As with most acronyms there are people who both agree and disagree with its use and I am not going to go into that here.

I simply want to help clarify and also normalize what I hear from many allies, which is fear of using the wrong term, which then leads them to be silent and not speak at all.

And what I say to that is, it is okay if you are confused or unsure, but remaining silent is more harmful, to you and others. It is okay to ask. Most people will be glad that you care enough to ask. This is true in many areas related to race, ethnicity, gender identity and sexual orientation. Terms matter, but they change and it may be that you don’t know, so ask.

Be human, be vulnerable and own your confusion. It’s okay!
