Gender Diversity 101: Non-Binary
What does it mean to be non-binary?
Well, that depends on the person. In general, though, it means that an individual does not identify as falling into what American society has traditionally seen as the only two genders – male or female. But as we are rediscovering what other cultures in other eras have recognized, there is a great variety in individuals’ experiences of their gender.
Non-binary folx may see themselves as being fluid and moving between feeling male or female; they may see themselves as both male and female; they may see themselves as neither male nor female, or something else entirely. Each individual experience of gender is valid, and it is valid even if it changes.
