  • Jane’s Addiction’s ‘She Talks to Angels’

Not everyone has a biological family that is healthy enough and loving enough. And at this holiday time with all of this talk of family, I want you to know I see you.

Sometimes people are orphans, despite having living family. If you feel this way, you are not alone.

And it does not mean that there is something wrong with you or that you need to find a way to be able to be with your bio family and have a relationship with them.

I fully believe that the title of family is one that needs to be earned. But if you grew up in a family that was abuse, toxic, neglectful or dysfunctional that title has not been earned. If they will not accept you for who you are, you don’t need them in your life. You can find and create your own chosen family.

It is okay if you need to keep distance from your bio family and love them from afar. You have the right to decide who you let into your life, whatever messages your family of origin may give you.

You will make it through this holiday time.  I see you. Your experience is valid, as are your choices.
