You may have seen the term ‘latinx’ and I am sure some of you are wondering what this means. It is simply a gender neutral way of referring to people with Latin American roots.

It is an attempt to be more inclusive in our language.

Just like you might see the term folx used as well. Folx is used to specifically indicate that members of traditionally marginalized groups, such as people of color or trans individuals, are being included.

It may seem small to some people, but language is incredibly important and powerful. I personally remember growing up and how the ‘man’ was used to refer to both men and when someone was referring to both men and women, like “the history of man.” I always felt erased and unincluded.

It is a small but powerful change we can make to be purposefully and visibly inclusive.
