There is often a narrative around gender diversity that it is new, and strictly a white phenomenon, or a North American phenomenon. Each of these narratives and assumptions are wrong. Over the next couple of weeks I will be posting examples that  show how inaccurate these assumptions are.

As it is still Hispanic Heritage month, let’s start with an example from Mexico. In Mexico’s state of Oxaca, they have acknowledged the existence of 3 genders since pre-colonial times.

Muxes are a third gender category for individuals who were assigned male at birth, and whose identity does not align with traditional male gender and sexual roles.

These individuals are valued members of their society and an annual Vigil of the Intrepids is a celebration of muxes in the community.
