Often when people come into therapy, they express some version of this hope, that they can simply forget what happened to them, go back to the way they were before. This is not possible. It is possible to heal so that they are no longer walking around with a gaping wound in their souls, but that wound will leave a mark. I help my clients learn now to let go of the pain of their past so that they can live more fully in the present. Not as though the damage never happened, but in spite of it.
