This applies to all difficult or unpleasant emotions. Most of us would do well to learn this strategy for these emotions as they are meant to inform us and our choices and decisions.

These emotions are ours whether we want them to be or not. Ignoring them or pushing them away does not actually get rid of them. Instead they just accumulate and build pressure until they explode out in unexpected, and usually unwanted, ways.

Ironically it is when we expend energy to deny, minimize or push away these emotions that we actually cause them to stick around longer.

We must learn to be able to sit with difficult emotions, welcome them for the teachers that they are and be thankful for them for this reason. Once we do that, they will much more naturally flow through us and out.
