A key feature of mental health is flexibility and adaptability. Our beliefs and coping strategies and decision making should all be informed by the particulars of a situation.

Life experiences and learning should influence and inform our way of viewing ourselves and the world.

When a person has experienced chronic traumatization, however, beliefs and responses can become rigid and inflexible. This is because they are often not responding to the present situation, they are often, at least in part, responding to past situations and trauma.

That is why getting into therapy with someone who works with trauma is so important. It can be difficult to see the ways in which we have lost sight of the present. It can be difficult to identify the things that were not learned because of trauma and the attempt to survive. It is certainly not impossible; it just takes guidance.
