I think we have a skewed view of strength and weakness at times. The strength we highlight and talk about in our society is the strength of muscles and might, superheroes and villains. But I think the real strength lies in things much more subtle.

There is an incredible amount of strength required to raise healthy, securely attached adults. This strength shows through in the gentle way that good enough parents often respond to fear, need and pain in their children. How much strength it takes to be gentle with a child who is scared and in need of consolation. How much strength it takes to give a child space to try new things, to fall down and let them figure out how to get up on their own.

To all the parents out there who do their best day in and day out, thank you for your gentleness and strength!
