10/26 pic Experience has taught me that you cannot value dreams according to the odds of their coming true. Their real value is in stirring within us the will to aspire.

As we come to the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, I thought I would reflect on this quote from Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor.

This is consistent with my training in psychosocial rehabilitation when I worked at community mental health clinics. I was always taught to support people in their chosen goals. Firstly, because we never know what a person might actually be capable of. And secondly, because dreams inspire us and spur us to action.

Your dreams are worth pursuing. Dreams of finding peace and healing are necessary motivators for doing the hard work of recovering from a traumatic event, or a traumatic life.

Your dreams of fully actualizing yourself in the body and the gender you know yourself to be are required to find the will to navigate a world that makes this difficult and cumbersome.

Hold onto your dreams, may they light your path and light a fire in your soul.
