  • Self-Soothing with Sight

Self-soothing strategies are skills that will help you calm your mind and body. So for visual self-soothing strategies you can thumb through magazines and find pictures of people, places and things that evoke calm feelings within you and then make a collage of them and then when you need to evoke those calm feelings you can look at you collage.

Of course nature is always a good source of calming sights so you can go to the beach and watch the waves, go outside and watch the clouds pass by, sit in your back yard or a park and watch whatever nature has going on. Create your own art if it is calming to you. Also another great idea from the autism/neuro-atypical world, create a glitter bottle. Google it if you don’t know what it is, but it sort of awesome!!! Or check out this simple DIY. Then as you are using any of these skills, your mind will naturally try to bring up all the things it wants to worry about, refocus it on whatever it is in front of you. Finding the skills that work for you is a matter of trial and error. If at first you don’t succeed, try again until you do.
