  • Transgender Day of Remembrance

This week is Transgender Awareness Week, which culminates in Friday’s Transgender Day of Remembrance.

This Day of Remembrance is when we remember the trans and gender diverse individuals lost to violence over the past year. As the visibility of trans folx has increased so has the violence against them.

This year saw an unprecedented number of trans and gender diverse people murdered. Worldwide, it is estimated that 350 trans and gender diverse people were murdered this past year, which is up 6% from the previous year. Thirty-four of those people were killed in the US.

These murders are disproportionately of trans women and femmes (98%) and primarily are Black and Latinx. The average age of those killed was 31, with the youngest being 15.

These statistics are estimates as there is no official tracking of this information, and often in death, these individuals are misgendered and dead named.

Demand justice for trans and gender diverse people in life and in death.
