    Mr. Rogers was so wise!

Emotions are normal. Being able to express them is healthy and normal. Feelings give us data about ourselves and our perceptions.

For a lot of folks though, who grew up in abusive, toxic, scary homes feelings may seem dangerous. A lot of the folks I work with feel they must hide or minimize their feelings, even from themselves and this is not healthy. I find that the strategy of stuffing feelings leads to someone getting a whole host of different physical health issues as well as not knowing how to cope with a strong emotion.

There is a reason that therapists are known for asking people, “and how does that make you feel.” This is because if I can help you recognize what you are feeling and help you talk about it, it makes it less overwhelming, scary and upsetting.
