It has been a while since I posted about grounding skills, and I thought they might be especially useful right now.
Grounding skills are things that can help ground us into the reality of the here-and-now.
This is a useful skill to have when triggers bring us into the there-and-then of the event, by way of an intrusive memory or a flashback.
It can help remind us that we are safe in this moment by grounding us in the reality of what is going on around us in this present moment.
It can reconnect us to our bodies if we get dissociated, numbed out or frozen.
Any of the sense can be used to ground ourselves. Basic math problems can get us out of the emotional swirl from the past. The reassurance or calm of a pet or nature can reduce the felt need to flee.
In following posts I will go over each in more detail.
